Products & selection#
How acrylic foam tape differs from ordinary double-sided tape, whether it can replace imported high-bond foam tape, and how to choose thickness and colour.
What is the difference between acrylic foam tape and ordinary double-sided tape?
The carrier and the way load is carried. Acrylic foam tape uses a closed-cell acrylic foam carrier with real thickness and elasticity: it fills gaps and absorbs stress and vibration — that is structural bonding. Ordinary double-sided tape is mostly a thin film carrier, suitable only for flat lamination, with far lower shear and peel capability.
Can acrylic foam tape replace imported high-bond foam tape?
In low- to medium-stress structural bonding, yes — but validate it by testing. The Derun HBA series offers a grade-by-grade cross-reference to common high-bond foam specifications by thickness and colour. Request samples and run peel, shear and ageing tests under your real conditions before switching.
Will acrylic foam tape bond to PP or PE?
Not directly. PP and PE are low-surface-energy materials with very low untreated bond strength. Corona, flame or primer treatment is required first, and we will run peel tests with you to confirm the solution.
Can acrylic foam tape replace welding and rivets?
In low- to medium-stress applications, yes. It distributes stress across the whole bond area and is used for elevator stiffeners, curtain-wall panels, automotive interior parts, nameplates and trim. Where concentrated impact occurs or the part is a primary load-bearing structure, keep the mechanical fixing.
Should I choose 0.4 mm or 1.0 mm?
It depends on the gap and the stress. Flat surfaces, small gaps and low load → 0.4 mm is more economical. Curved or uneven surfaces, gaps to fill, vibration or impact → 1.0 mm or thicker, so the foam can absorb the stress.
What thicknesses and colours does the HBA series offer?
Thickness from 0.25 mm to 3.0 mm across 29 standard grades, in grey, white, clear and black. Both thickness and colour can be customised, with a choice of white glassine paper, red PE release film or PET release film as the liner.
Acrylic foam, PE/EVA foam or PET double-sided tape — which do I need?
Gap filling, shear and vibration, structural bonding → acrylic foam tape (HBA series). Cushioning, sealing, sound insulation at a cost-sensitive price → PE / EVA foam. Thin, light lamination on flat surfaces where thickness matters → PET double-sided tape. Reworkable removal later → easy-pull tape.
What should I use where rework is required?
Acrylic foam tape is a permanent bond and is not intended for rework. Where damage-free removal is needed later (for example battery bonding), use an easy-pull tape: it releases by stretching or with alcohol, and leaves no residue.
Specifications & properties#
How to read peel, holding power, loop tack and temperature resistance, the test standards used, and the grade coding.
What does 'holding power ≥24 h at 80 °C' mean?
A specimen of specified width hangs a specified weight at 80 °C and must not fall off for at least 24 hours. It measures resistance to creep at elevated temperature; the whole HBA series meets ≥24 h except the 3.0 mm grade.
What is the service temperature range?
The HBA acrylic foam tape series is rated from -20 °C to 120 °C, within which performance is stable with no debonding or adhesive ooze. Tell us in advance if your application falls outside this range or has special conditions, and we will evaluate the formulation.
Will it age during long-term outdoor use?
Acrylic systems resist UV ageing better than rubber-based adhesives. The HBA series resists chemical solvents, moisture and UV, and is suited to outdoor and harsh environments; for extreme conditions, run an ageing test before finalising.
What do the numbers and letters in an HBA grade mean?
Each grade has three parts. Taking HBA 48110G as an example: 481 is the acrylic foam series code; 10 is the adhesive thickness (two digits divided by 10 give millimetres — 10 = 1.0 mm, 05 = 0.5 mm, 20 = 2.0 mm; three digits are divided by 100, so 064 = 0.64 mm); G is the colour code (G grey / T clear / B black / W white). Some grades follow their own TDS.
What do peel adhesion, holding power and loop tack mean?
Peel adhesion is the force needed to peel the tape from the substrate — a measure of bond strength. Holding power (shear) measures resistance to creep under sustained load and heat. Loop tack measures how fast the tape grabs on contact, which affects assembly speed. Read all three together; peel alone can mislead.
What do GB/T and ASTM mean on the datasheet?
They identify the test method used. GB/T are Chinese national standards (GB/T 2792 peel, GB/T 4851 holding power); ASTM are ASTM International standards (ASTM D-3330 peel, D-3654 holding power). A stated standard means the value was measured under that condition, so data from different suppliers can be compared.
Why do different grades use different units (N/24 mm and N/inch)?
Because two TDS templates exist in our factory: earlier versions use imperial units (N/inch, kgf/inch) and newer ones metric (N/24 mm). We reproduce the original TDS exactly and do not convert, to avoid conversion error. For a like-for-like comparison, ask us for a converted table.
What are the standard sizes, and can you slit to width?
Standard width for the HBA series is 800 mm; length varies with thickness from 33 m to 660 m (see each grade's TDS). We slit to any width as small rolls, sheets or die-cut parts; non-standard sizes are confirmed per order.
Application & process#
Temperature, pressure, surface preparation, cure time, and how to remove the tape.
Can it be applied at low winter temperatures?
Apply above 15 °C. Below 10 °C the initial tack of acrylic adhesive drops noticeably. Avoid loading the bond for 24 hours; final strength is typically reached after 72 hours.
How long until the bond reaches final strength?
Initial tack develops as soon as the tape is applied under pressure. Avoid loading for 24 hours; final bond strength is usually reached after 72 hours. The lower the temperature, the longer it takes.
What surface preparation is required?
Surfaces must be clean, dry and free of oil and mould release agent. Wipe with isopropanol or alcohol before laminating, then apply enough pressure for full contact — this is the key step for final strength.
How much pressure is needed, and what tool?
Enough pressure to bring the tape into full contact with the substrate — normally a roller or a dedicated fixture, working from the centre outwards to push air out. Insufficient pressure leaves bubbles and directly reduces the effective bond area.
Can it be applied to curved surfaces?
Yes, provided the tape is thick enough to bridge the curvature. The greater the curvature, the thicker the grade (generally 1.0 mm and above), with thorough rolling after lamination. For gentle curves under low load, thinner grades also work.
How do I remove it if applied incorrectly?
Acrylic foam tape is a permanent bond and removal is difficult. Warm it to about 80–100 °C to soften the adhesive and peel slowly; residue can be treated with a dedicated adhesive remover. For reworkable assemblies, use an easy-pull tape instead.
How should the tape be stored, and what is the shelf life?
Store in the original packaging, away from light, at 4–38 °C and 0–85% relative humidity, protected from compression and direct sunlight. HBA shelf life is generally 12 months — see the grade's TDS for the exact figure.
Customising & die-cutting#
Sample matching, drawing-based sampling, die-cut part delivery and private-label packaging.
What is the MOQ for a custom grade?
Standard thicknesses and colours are stocked, so small trial quantities are possible; custom thickness, width, adhesive and liner require an MOQ assessment. Send the specification and estimated monthly volume and we will quote a clear MOQ and lead time.
How long does sampling take, and is it chargeable?
Standard grades can be sent as existing samples immediately. Custom sampling that needs new compounding or process adjustment is confirmed after evaluation of the specification. Send drawings, samples or the service conditions and we will carry out a technical assessment first.
Can you match a grade from our current supplier?
Yes. Send the sample in use or its specification, and we will benchmark thickness, adhesive system and physical properties, issuing comparison data. Test it under your real conditions before deciding to switch.
Can you deliver die-cut parts, and in what forms?
Yes — jumbo rolls, slit rolls and punched sheets, with shaped die-cutting, release tabs, locating holes and striping, all to drawing and ready for automated assembly lines.
Can you apply our brand and packaging?
Yes. Neutral packaging, customer-brand labels, barcodes and export packing are all supported; compliance documents (test reports, MSDS) can be provided to the requirements of the destination country.
How do I choose the release liner (red film / PET / white paper)?
Red film (red PE release film) is stiff and easy to tear by hand — good for manual or semi-automatic application. PET release film is flatter — good for precision die-cutting and automatic placement. White double-sided release paper suits manual peeling after punching. Choose by your assembly method, or ask us to recommend.
Can you supply easy-pull tape, PU foam and thermally conductive tape?
Yes, by sampling and evaluation on request. Physical data for these ranges is not published on this site; parameters follow the measured report and the mutually agreed technical specification — please contact us directly.
Commercial & delivery#
Samples, quotations, MOQ, lead time, invoicing and how quality claims are handled.
What is the MOQ and lead time?
Standard specifications are stocked and samples can be sent for testing first. MOQ and lead time for custom thickness, colour and width are confirmed after evaluation — contact our sales team with your specification for a clear answer.
Can I get samples, and how do I apply?
Yes. In your enquiry, state the substrate, service temperature, load case and estimated volume. We will match the closest grade, send samples and include the datasheet.
How do I get a quotation?
Provide five items: substrate, service temperature, load case, thickness and width requirements, and estimated monthly volume. The more complete the information, the more accurate the price.
What delivery forms are available?
Jumbo rolls, slit rolls, punched sheets and shaped die-cut parts, with release tabs, locating holes and striping as needed. Jumbo rolls suit customers with in-house die-cutting; finished parts go straight to the assembly line.
How are payment and invoicing handled?
Standard terms are bank transfer to the company account. Invoice type, tax rate and credit terms follow the contract; first orders from new customers are normally prepaid. Raise any specific terms with your enquiry and we will answer them together.
What happens if there is a quality problem?
Keep the batch number and the product and contact us promptly; we trace the batch and analyse the cause. Where the responsibility is ours, we replace, exchange or accept return as agreed in the contract. We recommend validating a small quantity before running a new batch.
Tape knowledge#
Selection and process notes distilled from years of production practice.
What is a double sided tape made of?
A double sided tape uses paper, cloth or plastic film as the carrier, with a rubber or acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive coated evenly on both sides, and a release liner on top. By adhesive chemistry it is classified as solvent-based (oil), emulsion (water), hot melt, calendered or reactive.
What types of double sided tape are common?
Grid (mesh) double sided tape, reinforcement tape, rubber double sided tape, high temperature double sided tape, non-woven double sided tape, residue-free double sided tape, tissue double sided tape, double sided glass cloth tape, PET double sided tape and foam double sided tape — all widely used across industries.
Which double sided tape suits which application?
Hot melt double sided tape is used for stickers, stationery and office work; oil-based (solvent) double sided tape gives higher adhesion for leather, pearl foam, sponge and footwear; embroidery double sided tape for computerised embroidery; foam double sided tape where gap filling and cushioning are needed; grid and filament reinforced tape where high tear resistance matters, such as curtain walls and aluminium composite panels.
How do I apply double sided tape without it turning white?
Apply it quickly, smoothly and in one go. Pulling the liner off slowly draws long adhesive strings and makes the adhesive layer uneven, which reads as whitening; a fast pull keeps the adhesive uniform because inertia stops it deforming. Pausing mid-pull also opens micro-gaps in the adhesive even when the tape looks untouched, which causes the same whitening.
What should I watch for when selecting an adhesive for automotive foam tape?
Storage life — every product has one, and acrylic grades are usually specified at 20 °C: the higher the temperature, the shorter the shelf life, while water-based grades are affected below −1 °C. Strength — there is no universal adhesive; match the grade to the substrate, do not over-specify strength for weak substrates, and weigh durability rather than initial tack alone; hot-cure adhesives far outperform room-temperature ones. Other — white latex and urea-formaldehyde adhesives cannot bond metal; for clarity use polyurethane, optical epoxy or saturated polyester; the adhesive must not attack the substrate (solvent-based chloroprene is unsuitable for polystyrene foam); and brittle adhesives should not be used on soft materials.
How do I choose a foam tape?
Thickness — it affects print repeat and print quality, and thicker foam gives more latitude; thickness usually refers to the compressed caliper, which is slightly less than the uncompressed value. Foam quality — good compression recovery keeps print quality stable and extends tape life, while foam density sets hardness and therefore the dot and solid print results. Release liner — a flat liner avoids stretching the foam during mounting and re-positioning and gives an even pressure zone, while a textured liner helps displace air during mounting.
Why can a tape be heat resistant?
A tape is a carrier plus an adhesive, so both must survive the temperature. The principle is that heat-resistant materials have a more stable molecular structure when heated, so high temperature grades use PET, polyimide (Kapton), glass cloth or silicone carriers with heat-stable adhesive systems. Common high temperature ranges include high temperature PET, polyimide, high temperature masking and glass cloth tapes.
Do bubbles in carton sealing tape affect quality?
No. Short rolls that have been stored for some time lose their bubbles gradually, and the longer they are stored the clearer they become. Imported lines de-air the roll before rewinding, giving a fully clear product at higher cost; domestic packing tape is not made to that standard because bubbles do not affect tensile strength or adhesion. Bubbles in freshly produced carton sealing tape are therefore normal.
